Increased Cooling Power Specifications for Bluefors Dilution Refrigerators

At Bluefors, continuous improvement is part of how we design and develop our cryogenic measurement systems. Today, we are increasing the performance specifications of our dilution refrigerators to reflect their actual real-world performance, and at the same time updating their naming convention.

After this update, our models more accurately reflect the guaranteed available cooling power, and make system selection more straightforward for our customers. This will make it easier to configure your system and plan your setups based on the available cooling power.

New Guaranteed Specifications

Increased cooling power effectively increases the capacity of the cryostat. Users can run larger experiments, add more measurement infrastructure, and use higher‑power cryogenic devices while staying within the system’s thermal limits. This is especially valuable for quantum computing labs when scaling qubit counts and increasing the number of channels.

In the time since our LD250, LD400 and XLD400 models were launched there have been significant improvements made to the available cooling power provided by these models. For this reason, we are updating our guaranteed cooling power specifications to reflect the real world performance of our systems.

LD350
(previously LD250)
LD450 / LD450sl
(previously LD400 / LD400sl)
XLD450sl
(previously XLD400sl)
Guaranteed cooling power at 100 mK> 350 µW> 450 µW> 450 µW
Guaranteed cooling power at 20 mK> 12 µW> 14 µW> 14 µW

Going forward, we will publish a single, guaranteed cooling power value (expressed as “>”) instead of separate “guaranteed” and “expected” figures, to make selecting and configuring your Bluefors system more straightforward.

Updated Names for LD and XLD Systems

As shown above, to highlight the updated cooling power specifications of the systems, we are also updating the model names to accurately correspond with the new guaranteed 100 mK performance:

  • LD250 System becomes LD350 System
  • LD400 / LD400sl Systems become  LD450 / LD450sl System
  • XLD400sl System becomes XLD450sl System

This change keeps the familiar product families while making the increased performance level immediately clear from the product name.

The updated specifications and names will appear on the systems as we roll out the portfolio refresh.

Cooling Power You Can Count On

While we are updating the guaranteed cooling power spec and system names, the systems themselves remain the same. Our dilution refrigerators continue to deliver ease-of-use and the reliability that research teams depend on for long‑term, low‑maintenance operation. All options, configurations, and measurement infrastructure remain fully available, ensuring that customers can tailor each system to their exact experimental needs. And throughout the entire lifecycle, our global technical support team continues to provide the high‑quality assistance and expertise that Bluefors is known for.
