Helium Battery
Cryogenic Measurement System Option
The Helium Battery makes it possible to run experiments at mK temperatures for a limited time with the pulse tube cryocooler turned off.
The Helium Battery works by condensing helium gas into a container installed at the 4K Flange. Once the container has been filled with liquid helium, the pulse tube cryocooler can be turned off, and by pumping from the reservoir the 4K Flange is cooled sufficiently for the dilution unit to continue operation.

Reduced Mechanical Vibration
The primary source of mechanical vibration in a dilution refrigerator is the pulse tube cryocoolers operating at low frequencies (1.4 Hz and related harmonics). With the Helium Battery, the system can be operated for a time without these mechanical vibrations.

Helium Battery
Cryogenic Measurement System Option
Helium Battery performance is characterized by the hold time, i.e., how long the Dilution Unit can be operated while the pulse tube cryocooler is turned off. For an empty LD system, the hold time is approximately 3.5 hours. Due to the increased heat load at the 4K Flange the hybrid system is not compatible with a superconducting magnet. All experimental wiring that increases the heat load to the 4K Flange will also decrease the hold time. In most practical cases, the hold time is between 2 to 3 hours.
The battery is filled manually, but the system can be operated remotely after filling. The volume of the Helium Battery is 1.2 liters, and it takes 1000 liters (NTP) of helium gas to fill.
