Pulse Tube Cryocooler

Unmatched Cooling Power

The PT450 delivers an industry-leading 5.0 W of cooling power at 4.2 K and 65 W at 45 K, making it the most powerful pulse tube cryocooler available. This exceptional performance enables it to reliably maintain ultra-low temperatures even under high thermal loads, supporting the most demanding cryogenic applications.

Low-Vibration Operation

The PT450 pulse tube cryocooler design features no moving parts in the cold head, significantly reducing vibration. This makes it ideal for applications involving sensitive instrumentation, where mechanical disturbances might degrade performance. The low-vibration profile also contributes to the system’s long-term reliability and minimal maintenance needs.

With a mean time between maintenance of 40 000 hours, the PT450 offers exceptionally low maintenance demands—ideal for users who prioritize uptime and reliability. For critical applications, preventative maintenance after this helps to efficiently plan downtime, while in less demanding setups the unit can continue operating until performance declines. This flexibility allows maintenance to be tailored according to your needs, minimizing interruptions and maximizing operational efficiency.

Fast Cooldown Time

Even with such high cooling power, the PT450 is engineered for a quick turnaround, reaching 4 K in just 60 minutes. This rapid cooldown minimizes system downtime and accelerates experimental workflows, allowing users to get down to operational temperatures without delay. Whether in a research lab or an industrial setting, this rapid cooldown greatly enhances productivity and allows you to get results, faster.

Wide Range of Applications

The PT450 is engineered to meet the demands of a broad range of advanced cryogenic applications, making it a versatile solution across many scientific and industrial domains. Its high cooling capacity and low-vibration operation make it particularly well suited for superconducting materials research, quantum technology applications, and low-temperature physics, where thermal stability and precision are critical.

In applications that typically require large volumes of liquid helium—such as cooling superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities—multiple PT450 units can now be used. These units offer a highly reliable and low-maintenance alternative. This setup enables users to eliminate reliance on liquid helium, reducing costs and sourcing needs, and eliminates regular refill operations.

The PT450 can also be utilized in helium reliquefaction, where its high cooling power enables a significant increase in the liquefaction rate of helium reliquefiers. The cryocooler is also suitable for use in dilution refrigerators, to scale up the 4K cooling powers in these systems.

Suitable for Tilted Operation

The PT450 also supports use in space and telescope instrumentation, where it operates reliably in tilted orientations—an essential feature for detectors mounted on moving platforms or in observatories. For example, pulse tube cryocoolers are used with Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) telescopes to increase the sensitivity of instruments, and they also enable scaling up low temperature detector technologies. We have performed extensive research on the tilted operation of cryocoolers, which shows they can be operated at a tilt angle without a major decrease in cooling power performance.

Seamless Integration

The PT450 is also available with a versatile remote motor option, and offers a wide range of custom configurations, including Conflat and ISO flanges, gas and electrical feedthroughs, and recondensing heat exchangers. This flexibility allows seamless integration into a variety of cryogenic setups, whether for standard laboratory use or highly specialized systems.
