Measurement System

The XLDHesl Measurement System is designed for the most demanding experiments conducted at 1 K or 0.5 K temperatures.

The XLDHesl Measurement System is designed for demanding experiments conducted at 1 K or 0.5 K temperatures. The base temperatures depend on the helium isotopes used, with 1 K achieved using helium-4, and 0.5 K achieved with helium-3.

The measurement system features a large experimental space, and provides the same extensive wiring capabilities as the Bluefors XLDsl Dilution Refrigerator Measurement System it is based on.

There are two different models of the system: XLD400Hesl and XLD1000Hesl. The key difference between these systems is the Gas Handling System used.

Superconducting magnets can be easily integrated into the XLDHesl, and the system can be upgraded to a Dilution Refrigerator Measurement System at any later stage.

High, Continuous Cooling Power 

The main advantage of the XLDHEsl System is its robust Gas Handling System that provides high and continuous cooling power to the system.

The system can be operated with either helium-3 or helium-4 gas isotopes. The typical base temperature, below 500 mK, is easily achievable with 7 liters of helium-3 as an operational gas. Temperatures below 900 mK are achievable with helium-4. 


Fast Exchange of Wiring with Side-Loading

The side-loading feature allows wiring assembly work for the installation set flanges to be performed on a workbench away from the cryostat. Consequently, the preparation of a wiring assembly or a full experiment can be performed while the system is running. When the system is warmed up to room temperature, the assembly can be immediately exchanged, greatly reducing the room temperature idle time.

Preparing and exchanging the installation set assembly is carried out using a dedicated installation tool that provides the mechanical stability and maintains correct spacing between flanges when the assembly is not mounted into the cryostat.


Extensive Experimental Wiring Capabilities 

The XLDHesl Measurement System features a variety of access ports between the Room Temperature and the Mixing Chamber Flanges, the primary ports being the six side-loading line-of-sight (LOS) ports for experimental wiring.

The side-loading system is compatible with our High-Density Wiring options. High-Density Wiring is a modular option for the XLDHesl system that enables high scalability for the experimental wiring, especially for high-frequency signals.

The Evaporator Flange diameter is 520 mm. 


Upgrade to a Dilution Refrigerator Measurement System 

The XLDHesl Measurement System is an XLDsl System without the dilution unit. It can be upgraded to a Dilution Refrigerator Measurement System at any later stage, and the upgrade can be completed with an on-site installation in 3–4 days. 

The XLD400Hesl model can also be upgraded to a full XLD400sl Dilution Refrigerator Measurement System, and the XLD1000Hesl model to an XLD1000sl System.


Temperature Controller

The Bluefors Temperature Controller enhances the user experience of our cryogenic systems. With a modern and intuitive user interface, you get direct control and overview of the temperature status of the system. The Bluefors Temperature Controller is fully integrated into the system.

Each of our systems is designed to be installed to a specific location defined in advance. A separate layout drawing is made for each Bluefors system, which should always be referred to for exact dimensions.

Facility Requirements
